I’ve wanted
to try Vegan Egg since Follow Your Heart first announced it but hadn’t managed
to find it yet, so I was super happy when it turned up in this month’s The
Vegan Kind box! I didn’t really eat scrambled egg before I was vegan, but black
salt has become a staple in my kitchen, so I was very interested!
The product
itself is a powder which must be mixed with water to form a liquid. This paste
can then be heated and used for yolk, fried and made into omelettes, or
scrambled. We tried it scrambled because my boyfriend loves scrambled eggs, so
I knew he’d appreciate this product much more than me. I’m all for encouraging
him to use vegan alternatives, especially ones with as much fibre and as little
saturated fat as this.
When
cooked, we had it on toast. The first thing that I noticed was that I could
taste the toast more than the Vegan Egg! Although it tasted fine when mixed
together, it was disappointingly bland when cooked. My boyfriend said that’s how
eggs really are, but I’m not so sure. Anyway, I chucked loads of black pepper
on mine and it made it miles better. If you’re a fan of stronger flavours, I’d
recommend adding some extra seasoning to the powder before you cook it or
serving it with a sauce.
The texture
of it when cooked was very egg-like; it was rubbery, just like well-done
scrambled eggs should be. Ironically this actually put me off a little bit
because I’m simply not used to these kinds of textures anymore – my diet is almost
entirely crunchy or soft foods nowadays. Give me scrambled tofu over this any
day.
As ours
came in a subscription box, we didn’t consider the cost of it. It is pricey,
retailing at around £7 for a box that only replaces 15 eggs maximum. I’ve heard
rumours of it getting reduced to £3 in some shops, so definitely grab some if
you see it at that price!
Overall, I
wasn’t that impressed. It was bland and chewy and I wasn’t satisfied afterwards.
However, I’ll definitely be using this for my boyfriend’s breakfasts (who doesn’t
like scrambled tofu at all) as he loved it. I’m excited to see how it works for
other egg-based dishes (specifically omelettes) but my hopes aren’t that high.
Despite my disappointment, I imagine this would be an amazing product for
people transitioning to the vegan lifestyle!

I was so excited when I saw this on your Instagram but somewhat disappointed to hear about the blandness and texture! Looks like I'll be sticking to the scrambled tofu in future too ;)
