iAnimal: A new form of animal rights activism

Earlier this month, I had the wonderful opportunity to work alongside the charity Animal Equality. UKC VegSoc worked with them to bring their iAnimal experience to our campus.

iAnimal is a virtual reality event which shows you the animals’ experiences of being reared for livestock and then slaughtered. Unlike most animal rights videos, this does not aim to be provoking or gory - it actually shows best practice within the industry. In this way, it gives an honest look into the processes of factory farming. All participants are informed of this beforehand. I think this approach works because it’s not ‘overbearing’ in the way some animal rights activism can be. Individuals choose themselves whether to watch the video, and can opt out at any time. The approach is informative rather than dogmatic, which helps people digest it more easily.

Overall, the two days were very successful; we had around 150 people watch the film and sign up to our mailing list. Given that we were in the middle of deadlines, this is an excellent number! The first day was quiet due to bad weather, but the second day was very busy. I hope everyone will at least be more mindful of where their food comes from.

I’d like to say a massive thank you to Animal Equality for taking the time to work with us to spread this important message, and to everyone from VegSoc who helped out at the stall.

I definitely recommend you experience iAnimal if you get the chance. They are generally present at vegan festivals such as Veg Fests around the country.
