Berlin | The most vegan city in the world?

Vegan currywurst at Curry At The Wall

In June, my partner and I went on our first holiday abroad together. Our destination was Germany, specifically Berlin then Köln. We partially chose Germany because we had heard so many good things about the availability of vegan options in major cities (although Paramore touring also contributed to our choice!) so I decided to share my thoughts on this topic.

Germany is traditionally a "meat and potatoes" kind of country - when someone says "German food", most people think of sausages, meat stew, cold cuts and cheeses. This is absolutely true, but German supermarkets prove that this kind of diet can be maintained while not harming animals! All of the supermarkets we visited had several kinds of vegan meats, cheeses and sauces. We managed to get the ingredients for a meat, cheese and mayonnaise sandwich at Berlin Hauptbahnhof (the main train station) which saved us on our long journey to Köln. I'd personally recommend the Simply V cheese brand and Like Meat gyros.

There's also a massive number of vegan friendly eateries, with Happy Cow listing over 300 and more opening every day. There's no way you can eat at all of them in one trip, and it would be a struggle to get through them all in a year! We ate at a few places, but our favourite was the Vego Cafe (yes, like the chocolate - it's underneath their head office) which has loads of vegan junk food, including kebabs, burgers and desserts. We also loved Curry at the Wall, which is an omnivore establishment but offers vegan currywurst. My partner subsequently became addicted to currywurst; we even visited the museum!

Don't worry, we did plenty of tourist-y things too. My favourite experience was Berliner Unterwelten, a tour of the now closed sections of an U-Bahn station that was used as a bomb shelter in the second world war.

If you've been to Berlin, I'd love to know your thoughts on the vegan food there. Tell me all about it in the comments down below!
